A self-described math and science "nerd" at Stevens High School (Rapid City, SD), Susan was selected as one of the top science students in the country and attended the Research Science Institute (which is currently held each summer at MIT). Her research efforts focused on mass spectrometry use in forensics.
Susan attended Baylor University in Waco, TX, on a Presidential Scholarship in the Honors Program with the intent to pursue a career in medicine. During a fateful field experience rotation through a local Head Start Program, she found her true calling in education.
Susan went on to graduate study in Language and Literacy at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, where she studied under many of the preeminent educators of our time. Susan trained in the Harvard Literacy Laboratory and was a Graduate Assistant at the academic journal Research in the Teaching of English.
Susan has taught 2nd grade, served as a Reading Specialist and School Literacy Coordinator, and assisted a school district language arts improvement program in conjunction with Columbia University. She has held teacher and reading specialist certifications in four states. Susan holds a BS from Baylor University and an EdM from Harvard University.
